All classes received the revision instruction sheet for the final draft of the personal essay, complete with due dates (they vary; see the hand-out!). If you were absent, be sure to pick one up from the bookshelf. Also, people who were absent will have to make up the assessment mentioned below.
Third period finished (briefly) "The Wanderer"; I didn't get you started on anything else from the book. We used the time to get the ASB report and sign up for Stuffing the Bus for Children's Hospital. Don't forget to go shopping tonight! It was late enough in the period when we got started on a reading comprehension and skills assessmement that most people did NOT finish; you'll have time to do that tomorrow.
4th period: We skipped "The Wanderer" so we could get started much sooner; everyone finished the assessment. I collected "The Wanderer" homework papers though. They were stamped on Tuesday if you had them done on time, but all papers were collected today. So TURN YOURS IN if you were absent
6th period: I waited until the end to go over the final draft essay hand-out, but I put pages on the board for people to work on from the text book. Some people got this done, but others really didn't have time (or, ahem, didn't fully use the time they had).
SO, for everyone--we'll pick up the loose ends tomorrow, but here are some pages that EVERYONE will have to read. If you are gone tomorrow (Friday), know that these pages need to be read online by Monday.
- 112-114: "The Wife's Lament" (interesting translation; you'll get a different translation tomorrow in class)
- 38-39: Specific information on the EPIC. The three Exeter book poems are "lyrics"; Beowulf will be an epic
- 40-41: Introductory material on Beowulf; we will be reading the whole work from books you'll check out, but we will use this support material from the textbook plus a few more pages added later.
Culminating Project: due Oct. 14
Personal Essay: due by Oct. 7 or by Oct. 11 (people with early deadlines) or by Oct. 16 (everyone).
