1) There will be a test over 1984 on Friday. There are three things to do tonight as you start to review:
- Consider what YOU think Orwell's greatest point/purpose was in writing 1984. Don't just blindly follow what some source you've read says. Make a decision about what seems most important to you, in the early 21st century; that might vary from what most concerned Orwell in the very middle of the 20th century. Write something down in your notes, and provide a couple of text-based reasons so that you'll be able to defend your choice.
- There will be a short writing question on the test that concerns song lyrics. Review each of the following and decide how/why they are more important to the meaning of the book than merely random words from a song.
- the "bells/churches" song--be sure to know the general content of the verses first introduced as well as the last verse that is not revealed untl later on
- the prole woman's song--mostly in Chapter Two, but occurs in at least a couple of scenes as Winston looks out the window from the room above Mr. Charrington's shop
- the Chestnut Tree Cafe is of course a place where significant action is referred to or takes place in real time throughout the book--but there are also words to a song that includes a "chestnut tree"; find them and reflect on their meaning
- Do you have general unresolved questions about characters/motivation/events/meaning in the novel? Tomorrow would be a good time to ask.
